The wind comes off the sea: nauseous town smells are driven towards the East in Europe, towards the West in America. That’s the reason why the smart districts are in the West in Paris (the 16th arrondissement, Neuilly, Saint-Cloud, etc.) and London (the West End), and in the East in New York (the East Side).
